California Rapid Assessment Method

CRAM

Selecting and Ordering CRAM Imagery

The eCRAM download comes with a basemap of major roads, county boundaries, water bodies, and parklands. eCRAM also takes advantage of topographic maps and detailed aerial imagery, providing the user with a high-resolution view of the site they are assessing. The topographic maps and imagery are distributed on DVD.

Note: Users with high-speed internet connections have the option of downloading the imagery from the State's spatial information library (CaSIL); however, the sheer size and/or number of the downloads may make this a difficult process. Instructions for downloading imagery are provided in downloading CRAM imagery.

Topographic maps

Topographic maps for the entire state are a required component of CRAM. Both 1:250,000 and 1:100,000 scale maps are included on one DVD.
Size: 1.4 GB. All DVD orders will include this DVD.

Low-resolution color imagery

A low-resolution (10-meter) version of 2005 color NAIP imagery for the entire state is included on one DVD. With this imagery on the CRAM computer the performance of the map display is increased significantly. Can be used with either the high-resolution NAIP or DOQQs (see below). JPEG format.
Size: 850 MB. All DVD orders will include this DVD.

Choice of high-resolution imagery DVDs

In addition to the two DVDs provided above, you should select at least one of the following:

1. Black and white orthophoto quads (DOQQs), JPEG format

These DOQQs are provided in a single set covering the entire state, and have been converted to JPEG format to decrease file size to about 10% of the standard TIFF DOQQs. The images were taken in the late 1990s.

The DOQQs are a good choice if you will be working state-wide and may not have a lot of advance notice as to where you'll be working—with imagery for the entire state in hand, you be ready. 1-meter resolution.
Size: 50 gigabytes (12 DVDs).

2. National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP)

NAIP imagery is full color, taken in 2005. The disadvantage of NAIP imagery is its large size. NAIP imagery for CRAM is distributed by county; most counties are a few gigabytes in size. File sizes for each county are provided below. 1 meter resolution.
