Training

The California Rapid Assessment Method for wetlands and riparian areas (CRAM) has been developed as a tool for standardized and cost-effective assessment of wetland condition. This training session will provide the skills necessary to consistently conduct accurate assessments of wetlands using CRAM, and will provide guidance on the use of CRAM for ambient and project assessment and monitoring. The session involves both classroom and field instruction, with an emphasis on the field component. To successfully complete the course, participants will be required to pass a written and a field-based proficiency examination.

Objectives

The Practitioner CRAM Training is structured as a 5-day "General CRAM Training". This 5-day course provides a broad understanding of the methodology, assumptions, and background to conduct field assessments for multiple types of wetlands. Sessions will equip practitioners with overall knowledge of how CRAM is used to assess multiple types of wetlands, and also details specific to each type. However, the field portion of each session will focus on two specific wetland types, so that practitioners gain experience in accurately and consistently conducting assessments using these two CRAM modules.

Previously trained practitioners that have attended at least 5 days of training (2 modules) are considered fully trained (meaning the equivalent of the current 5-day training). Previously trained practitioners that have attended a 3-day training are considered trained only in the module that they attended (most likely Riverine or Vernal Pools). Starting in April 2013, new practitioners will need to attend and successfully complete a 5-day format session to be considered fully trained in CRAM.

The only exception to the training structure is for Vernal Pool wetlands. This wetland type will continue to be taught as a single wetland module, separate from the 5-day general CRAM training. This is due primarily to the unique nature of the metrics in the module and the plant species found in these wetlands, which limit the time frame and locations in which the training can be offered.

General Training for Practitioners

CRAM practitioners that have completed the 5-Day General Training, previously known as Practitioner-Level training, are qualified to conduct field assessments. This course trains practitioners who will primarily be conducting site assessments, interpreting CRAM scores, designing assessment or monitoring projects, writing reports using CRAM data, and interacting with managers and agency staff. It provides participants with a broad understanding of the methodology, assumptions, and background of the method, as well as with intensive field-based practice to be able to accurately conduct field assessments for multiply wetland types. The field portion will focus on two specific wetland types, however practitioners will be equipped with the skills to conduct an assessment on any wetland type, with the exception of Vernal Pools. A specific 3-day Vernal Pools class is required for assessments in this wetland type.

To be considered fully trained and qualified to conduct field assessments, the practitioner must have successfully completed:

  • a 5-day General Training, or
  • a 3-day training plus an additional 2-day training in another module (this structure applied prior to 2013)
Those practitioners that have attended a 3-day Vernal Pool training are trained in the Vernal Pool module only.
Those practitioners that have attended a 3-day Riverine training (prior to 2013) are trained in the Riverine module only.

Manager-Level Training (for project managers, designers, planners, and regulatory staff)

The 2-day Manager-Level training is intended for project managers, designers, planners, and regulatory staff that need a fundamental understanding of CRAM and its application for project management and regulatory applications. This course does not provide the rigorous hands-on field time conducting assessments that the General Training provides, and thus these participants will not develop the skills necessary to conduct field assessments.

Training Frequency

The Level 2 Committee (CRAM oversight committee) of the California Wetland Monitoring Workgroup recommends that practitioners remain current in the method. It is recommended that:

  • If trained in 2013 or later, and have conducted very few assessments, the practitioner should attend a 1-Day Refresher Training. This class is also helpful for those practitioners that have been practicing regularly.
  • If trained prior to 2013, and have conducted very few assessments, the practitioner should attend a 5-Day General Training.
  • If trained prior to 2013, and have been regularly practicing, the practitioner should attend either a 1-Day Refresher Training or a 5-Day General Training.

2025 Training Session Details

The 2025 training sessions will return to the pre-Covid format, with fully in-person sessions including both indoor classroom time and outdoor field time. Covid precautions will still be implemented as dictated by local authorities.

The 2025 training sessions will be fully in-person and include both indoor classroom time and outdoor field time.

The class agenda will be emailed two weeks before each class begins. Each class will have classroom sessions on the first and second days of the class. Participants will have short practices exercises each evening, and a take-home test due on the last day of class.

The cost of each training depends on the class type, and will be paid via credit card:

  • 5-Day Practitioner-Level class- $1,800 per person
  • 3-Day Vernal Pool class- $1,100 per person
  • 1-Day Refresher class- $250 per person

Registration will open on February 3, 2025. Each class is subject to minimum and maximum enrollment. Classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment will be cancelled, with an option to shift to a different class, shift to a 2026 class, or have fees (minus $120 registration fee) refunded. Waitlists will be created for classes that reach their maximum. See additional details and registration links under each class listed in the training calendar below.

CRAM Trainers

The individuals listed below have assisted in the development of CRAM modules or have completed the journey-man process to become a CRAM trainer and are therefore approved to train one or more modules of the California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM). The wetland-class module(s) for which they are approved for training are shown.

Become a CRAM Trainer

CRAM welcomes experienced practitioners to fulfill the requirements to become a CRAM trainer. The process begins with becoming a journeyman trainer under one of the current trainers, to gain experience and the skills needed for teaching CRAM. As a journeyman, you will be required to complete both office and field-based components, including coursework, supervised applications of CRAM, and assisting in practitioner training sessions.

The following elements must be completed for an individual to become a CRAM trainer:

  • Attend and successfully complete a general CRAM training course (or equivalent),
  • Conduct and upload to eCRAM at least 30 CRAM assessments as part of a team of 2 or more people,
  • Notify the L2 of your commitment to becoming a trainer, and be sponsored by an existing lead trainer,
  • Participate in instructing a total of three 5-day training courses as a "journeyman" trainer (under the supervision of an established CRAM trainer), and
  • Receive endorsement from the sponsoring lead trainer
  • See the Data Quality Assurance Plan for CRAM, Section 7.3 for more details

Although a competency evaluation (either a written or field test) is not necessary if an individual successfully completes the office and field requirements as outlined above, individuals must be recommended by at least one established CRAM trainer (or member of the CRAM PI team) as “qualified” to teach CRAM. Final approval of any journeyman trainers must be vetted through the L2 subcommittee of the CWMW. When they receive final approval, trainers graduate from “journeyman” status to a fully qualified CRAM trainer. Trainers should only teach the CRAM module for the wetland type(s) for which they have been trained. Future CRAM trainers can be identified via practitioner training courses or be recommended by a member of the CRAM PI Team.

Qualified CRAM trainers will be required to attend an annual “Train the Trainers” workshop, and a ½ day “refresher” training if significant methodological revisions to the CRAM method have been made since their last training course was taught. The “Train the Trainers” workshop will take place over a 2-day period, and members of the established CRAM PI/training team will lead the workshop. The objectives of this workshop are:

  • To provide an opportunity for CRAM trainers to work closely with the CRAM PI Team on teaching skills, improving participant’s technical understanding of CRAM, and inter-team calibration at a minimum of two wetland types;
  • To refine the content and use of teaching tools (PowerPoint presentations, field books, photo-dictionaries, etc.) in both classroom and field settings;
  • To ensure trainers fully understand eCRAM and data quality issues;
  • To provide an opportunity for all participants to review, refine, and improve the CRAM training material and presentations;

To begin the journeyman process, please contact a current CRAM Trainer or PI member in your region. testing.
